Founded by three Oxford graduates, GoCardless makes it easy for individuals and businesses to collect recurring payments – such as for subscriptions or memberships – via Direct Debit using an online platform. It does this with a transaction fee that’s lower than those offered by major credit cards, where vendors typically have to absorb a cost of 2% of the transaction. In the last year the company has hit the milestone of processing more than £1 billion in transactions. It has also doubled its active merchant base to 12,000 businesses and expanded to France and Germany, with plans to enter Sweden in 2016.
