Ericsson and Qualcomm Technologies have successfully completed a lab trial for a Cat-M1 solution with MTN South Africa in support of MTN's Internet of Things (IoT) ambitions. The Cat-M1 trial uses IoT devices integrated with a Qualcomm MDM9206 global multimode LTE IoT modem and the Ericsson Massive IoT Radio Access Network product. The successful test will ensure MTN continues to lead in technological IoT advancements and will prepare MTN for a new wave of solutions that can be implemented in the new future. MTN South Africa will continue trialling devices and applications for Cat-M1 in its Test Bed lab. Cellular IoT technologies, such as Cat-M1 and their evolution into 5G, set a solid foundation for massive IoT by reducing complexity, lowering power consumption, expanding coverage, and increasing device density. Cat-M1 enables advanced IoT applications by providing hundreds of kilobits per second in throughput, mobility, and VoLTE support. Examples of typical Cat-M1 IoT applications include smart watches or fitness bands with integrated voice communications services, pet tracking devices, point of sale terminals, vending machines and vehicle tracking with emergency calling support.

MTN South Africa announced earnings results for the six months ended June 30, 2017. For the period, the company reported total revenue of ZAR 20,156 million against ZAR 10,841 million a year ago. EBITDA was ZAR 6,760 million against ZAR 5,979 million a year ago. Capital expenditure was ZAR 3,475 million against ZAR 4,773 million a year ago.

MTN South Africa announced preliminary audited earnings results for the year ended 31 December 2016. The company showed a positive turnaround in the second half of the year, benefiting from improved 3G and LTE network quality and aggressive sales of smartphones. The operation's subscriber base increased by 0.6% to 30.8 million, driven by the pre-paid segment, which increased its base by 0.9% to 25.6 million. The number of post-paid subscribers declined by 1.1% to 5.2 million, largely impacted by network quality challenges experienced, systems and customer service issues in the first half of 2016. Total revenue increased by 4.7% to ZAR 41,922 million mainly as a result of device revenue. Capex increased by 1.3% to ZAR 11,085 million for the year, and retained a strong focus on 3G and LTE network investment. The operation rolled out 1,134 co-located 3G sites and 1,538 LTE sites. EBITDA was ZAR 13,811 million against ZAR 13,370 million a year ago.
