Debruce Co Announces Executive Changes

Leo Morton decided to retire early from his job as chancellor of the University of Missouri-Kansas City to work for Paul DeBruce. DeBruce was founder and CEO of DeBruce Grain Inc., which was reaping more than $4.5 billion of annual revenue when it was sold to Gavilon LLC in 2011 for an undisclosed amount. DeBruce created DeBruce Companies in 2015 as a single family office to manage his investment portfolio. Morton will become the COO of DeBruce Cos. after his retirement from UMKC in October. Morton has led UMKC for nine years. Before that, he spent 14 years as an executive at Kansas City-based utility Aquila Inc., last working as senior vice president and chief administrative officer. He led the Aquila integration team through its merger with Kansas City Power & Light Co. In addition to his role as COO of DeBruce Cos., Morton will serve as chancellor emeritus of UMKC. Barbara Bichelmeyer, UMKC provost and executive vice chancellor, will fill in as interim chancellor.
