Alliance Rubber Company Partners with University to Infuse Graphene into Rubber Bands

Alliance Rubber Company to announce a partnership with the University of Sussex, U.K., to research and develop rubber products infused with graphene. The research program, under the guidance of Dr. Alan Dalton, professor of experimental physics, will develop new rubber products using graphene produced from Zenyatta graphite. Graphene, a material 200 times stronger than steel, can enhance mechanical, thermal and electrical properties in many materials. When add graphene to rubber, the rubber becomes lighter, stronger and conductive. Over the next year, Alliance will work with the university research program to determine the perfect graphene to rubber ratio. Under the agreement with the University of Sussex, Alliance is sponsoring two graduate students who will work exclusively on the graphene project for the next three years. The partnership is a long-term investment for the U.S. manufacturing company who is dedicated to staying innovative and keeping jobs in America.

University of Sussex Appoints Tim Westlake as Chief Operating Officer

The University of Sussex has appointed Dr. Tim Westlake as Chief Operating Officer (COO), reporting to Vice-Chancellor Adam Tickell. Dr. Westlake will be responsible for the University's administration, encompassing the entire University estate and its professional services. He joins Sussex from The University of Manchester, where he is currently the Director for the Student Experience, having started at the institution as Director of International Development in 2005. In his current role, he manages a team of 600 staff with responsibility for all centrally delivered student services from initial enquiry through to graduation, including the University's halls of residence and sports facilities. Since he was appointed as the University's first Director for the Student Experience, he has lead a broad range of transformational projects to significantly improve the experience of students. Dr. Westlake is currently the sponsor for a GBP 175 million halls of residence redevelopment programme that will ultimately deliver 3,200 new bedrooms and is the business lead for a GBP 25 million project to transform Manchester's student information system. Dr. Westlake plays an active role in the wider higher education community having held positions on a significant number of sector bodies. He is currently Deputy Chair of UCAS Council and a board member of the Higher Education Careers Service Unit. Dr. Westlake will take up his new position at Sussex in mid-August.

Professor Maziar Nekovee Joins University of Sussex's School of Engineering and Informatics as Head of Engineering and Design

Professor Maziar Nekovee, the chief engineer behind Samsung's European and UK research and collaborations into fifth-generation (5G) mobile technologies, will take up his new post as new Head of Engineering and Design in the University of Sussex's School of Engineering and Informatics on 1 February 2016.
