BI-LO, LLC Key Developments

Bi-Lo to Close Another Charlotte-Area Store in Newton

Bi-Lo continues to scale back its local presence, the grocer confirmed it is closing its grocery store in Newton later this month. The grocery store first opened at 2725 Northwest Blvd., off US-321, in 1989. About 52 store employees will be laid off as a result of the closure. Bi-Lo, owned by Southeastern Grocers, has been reducing its footprint in the Charlotte area over the years, though it still competes with other low-cost grocers like Food Lion and Wal-Mart. Southeastern Grocers has also been converting several Bi-Lo locations in the area into Harveys stores.

Bi-Lo is closing its location in Charlotte off Prosperity Church Road in June. The store first opened there in 1999. About 67 people work at the grocery store at 5336 Docia Crossing Road. The company has placed as many of them as possible at other area Bi-Lo stores. Bi-Lo confirmed earlier this week that it is also closing a Fort Mill store this summer. Southeastern Grocers has also been converting several Bi-Lo locations in the area into Harveys stores. It's unclear what will take the place of the store - Shropshier said Bi-Lo does not own the property.
