The Government of India may explore the option of strategic sale of surplas land of Bengal Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (BCPL) and Hindustan Antibiotics Limited. Bengal Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals Ltd has got the Union cabinet's approval for need-based sale of surplus land. Bengal Chemicals on December 28, 2016, said it could garner INR 600 million to INR 700 million if it offloaded around five acres of scattered surplus land at Panihati, which remained unutilised. The money can be used to expand business and improve its balance sheet. "There is some scattered land at Panihati that belongs to the company but cannot be meaningfully utilised for business purposes. So, we had sent details to the government some time back. In case we decide to offload this land, the proceeds can be utilised to cut debt as well as expand business," P.M. Chandraiah, Managing Director of Bengal Chemicals, told The Telegraph. "The sale (of land) would be through open competitive bidding to government agencies and outstanding liabilities will be met from sale proceeds." the cabinet said in a statement.
