Zimbabwe Announces Plan To Privatize State-Owned Firms

The Zimbabwe government has announced plans to privatize some of its ‘under-performing’ state firms. Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa told a press conference that a ‘comprehensive’ reform aimed at improving performance of the state-owned entities would result in some entities being merged, privatized, liquidated or absorbed as ministerial departments. He said four companies will be privatized including Allied Insurance Company (Pvt) Ltd. and Zimbabwe Grain Bag (Pvt) Limited. Among the entities targeted for partial privatization are Petrotrade (Private) Limited, Zimpost (Private) Limited, People's Own Savings Bank, Infrastructure Development Bank of Zimbabwe, Netone Limited, Telecel Zimbabwe Pvt. Ltd. and Tel-One Telecommunications Ltd. Struggling mines run by Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation will also be partially privatized, as well as Willowvale Mazda Motor Industries (Pvt) Ltd., Chemplex Corporation and Zimbabwe United Passenger Company Ltd.

Telecel Mulls Acquisitions

Telecel Zimbabwe Pvt. Ltd. intends to pursue acquisitions. The company aims at growing both organically and through acquisitions to become a leading player over the African continent.
