Dr. Maria M. Klawe, Ph.D., has been the President at Harvey Mudd College since 2006. Dr. Klawe served as a Dean of Engineering at Princeton University from 2003 to 2006. Dr. Klawe moved to Princeton in January 2003 from the University of British Columbia, where she served as Dean of Science from 1998 to 2002, Vice President of Student and Academic Services from 1995 to 1998 and Head of the Department of Computer Science from 1988 to 1995. She has made significant research contributions in several areas of mathematics and computer science including functional analysis, discrete mathematics, theoretical computer science and interactive-multimedia for mathematics education. She co-founded CRA-W. She co-founded Silicon Chalk and is its Chairman of the Board. She was Chairman of the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology from 2003 to 2008. She serves as a Trustee at Mathematical Sciences Research Institute. She served as a Director of BrightSide Technologies Inc. Dr. Klawe served as a Director of Microsoft Corporation since March 2009 until December 02, 2015. Dr. Klawe served as a Director of Broadcom Corp. from May 6, 2011 to February 1, 2016. She was President of the Association of Computing Machinery. She has been on the board of the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology since its inception. She is a Trustee of the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics at UCLA. She serves on many boards and advisory councils of other organizations. These include the BC Premier's Advisory Council on Science and Technology, the American Mathematical Society, the Computing Research Association, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and the Canadian Mathematical Society. She founded and was Director of the EGEMS project. Dr. Klawe was a Professor of Computer Science at Princeton University from 2003 to 2006. She was elected as a Fellow of the Association of Computing Machinery in 1995 and received the Vancouver YWCA Women of Distinction Award in Science and Technology in 1997 and in 2001, she was recognized with the Wired Woman Pioneer Award, Canadian New Media Educator of the Year, BC Science Council Champion of the Year. Her awards in 2003 included a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Alberta and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Waterloo. She has an Honorary Doctorate from Ryerson University. Dr. Klawe received her PhD in 1977 and BSc in 1973 in Mathematics from the University of Alberta.
