However, debate around the standards continues.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n                    <\/div>\n    <\/section>\n<\/div>\n\n<div another significant ESG data challenge for finance-industry stakeholders.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW152355358 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW79854115 BCX0\" lang=\"EN\" xml:lang=\"EN\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW79854115 BCX0\">According to the European Commission, reported corporate sustainability information helps investors, among others, <\/span><\/span><a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW79854115 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.ec.europa.eu\/capital-markets-union-and-financial-markets\/company-reporting-and-auditing\/company-reporting\/corporate-sustainability-reporting_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"TextRun Underlined SCXW79854115 BCX0\" lang=\"EN\" xml:lang=\"EN\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW79854115 BCX0\">evaluate the sustainability performance of companies<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"TextRun SCXW79854115 BCX0\" lang=\"EN\" xml:lang=\"EN\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW79854115 BCX0\">. But the frameworks companies are reporting on under the CSRD are not always the same frameworks investors have in mind when making decisions, according to Colleen <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW79854115 BCX0\">Denzler<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW79854115 BCX0\">, Chief Sustainability Officer at Loomis at Sayles &amp; Company.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW79854115 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW184167457 BCX0\" lang=\"EN\" xml:lang=\"EN\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW184167457 BCX0\">\u201cWhen you think about what asset owners and companies operating in Europe are going to need to deliver [through corporate sustainability reporting], it&#8217;s really coming down to a framework of governance, a framework of risk, and I would even go so far as to say a framework of fear \u2014 fear around greenwashing, and fear around firms not meeting their net zero obligations,\u201d says <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW184167457 BCX0\">Denzler<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW184167457 BCX0\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW184167457 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<div\n\tclass=\"bb-wysiwyg\"\n\t\t>\n\t<h2><span class=\"TextRun MacChromeBold SCXW193998186 BCX0\" lang=\"EN\" xml:lang=\"EN\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW193998186 BCX0\">Involving the auditor community<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW193998186 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n\n<\/div>\n<div\n\tclass=\"bb-wysiwyg\"\n\t\t>\n\t<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW217340610 BCX0\" lang=\"EN\" xml:lang=\"EN\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW217340610 BCX0\">Materiality, on the other hand, is a more traditional framework for investors\u2019 decision-making processes. Materiality has multiple meanings in the sustainability context, however (with \u201cfinancial materiality\u201d referring to matters that could affect profitability and \u201cenvironmental and social <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW217340610 BCX0\">materiality\u201d referring to activities that generate negative environmental impacts that could affect wider stakeholders).<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW217340610 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW119574672 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW119574672 BCX0\">Giving investors the ability to assess and understand materiality considerations in the sustainability context starts with the efforts of the auditors who assess the environmental-, social-, and governance-related risks companies <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW119574672 BCX0\">ultimately disclose<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW119574672 BCX0\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW119574672 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW205324506 BCX0\" lang=\"EN\" xml:lang=\"EN\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW205324506 BCX0\">\u201cThe role of auditors is going to be incredibly important in how this develops \u2014 and I think that&#8217;s underappreciated \u2014 because this is not just about doing the disclosure, it&#8217;s about the process that you go through to get to that disclosure,\u201d says French of sustainability reporting. \u201cThere are a lot of novel questions around how you apply general reporting principles and financial materiality lens to information where it may be challenging to make a quantitative materiality assessment.\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW205324506 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<div\n\tclass=\"bb-wysiwyg\"\n\t\t>\n\t<h2><span class=\"TextRun MacChromeBold SCXW82535949 BCX0\" lang=\"EN\" xml:lang=\"EN\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW82535949 BCX0\">Refining standards to prioritize <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW82535949 BCX0\">usefulness<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW82535949 BCX0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW82535949 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n\n<\/div>\n<div\n\tclass=\"bb-wysiwyg\"\n\t\t>\n\t<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW206285236 BCX0\" lang=\"EN\" xml:lang=\"EN\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW206285236 BCX0\">Mindful of the importance of addressing the ESG data quality challenge through auditing, the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) \u2014 a global membership organization focused on financial supervision \u2014 endorsed the ISSB standards only after engaging in a comprehensive review that involved challenging some of ISSB\u2019s proposed standards.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW206285236 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">According to Jean-Paul Servais, IOSCO chairman, the existing standards are a great starting point for further refinement.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe think that [the existing standards] can be useful as you make informed decisions about the allocation of capital,\u201d says Servais. \u201c[But while] we are making progress, there is much more data to collect and capacity to build.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<div\n\tclass=\"bb-wysiwyg\"\n\t\t>\n\t<h2><span class=\"TextRun MacChromeBold SCXW12544596 BCX0\" lang=\"EN\" xml:lang=\"EN\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW12544596 BCX0\">Embracing a new phase<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW12544596 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW79464374 BCX0\" lang=\"EN\" xml:lang=\"EN\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW79464374 BCX0\">Driving up the meaningfulness and usefulness of ESG data from ISSB reporting and other measures will take time and collaboration.
