The original version appeared first on the Bloomberg Terminal.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin is the world&#8217;s best-known cryptocurrency and has overcome concerns and volatility to provide valuable returns for many investors.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, it has already surpassed $50,000, and was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-02-16\/bitcoin-jumps-to-50-000-as-record-breaking-rally-accelerates\">up 70% for the year<\/a> as of Feb. 17. The cryptocurrency&#8217;s speculative nature is regularly predicted to burn investors, but there are few signs of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2021-02-15\/personal-finance-bitcoin-s-volatility-should-burn-investors-it-hasn-t\">price swings reversing fortunes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The cryptocurrency is gaining momentum among financial service firms, with BNY Mellon and Morgan Stanley <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-02-14\/bitcoin-s-epic-run-is-winning-more-attention-from-wall-street\">creating new units to look into Bitcoin<\/a>. That news came on the heels of Tesla <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-02-08\/tesla-bets-1-5-billion-on-bitcoin-in-new-policy-crypto-surges\">announcing a $1.5 billion investment <\/a>in Bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p>Savvy investors have been able to use the speculative nature of this bull market to generate significant returns. That&#8217;s even as major financial industry voices, including European Central Bank governing council member Gabriel Makhlouf, still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-02-16\/reminded-of-tulip-craze-ecb-s-makhlouf-won-t-buy-bitcoin\">compare the cryptocurrency to the tulip mania<\/a> of the Dutch Golden Age.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The issue<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An investor who bought Bitcoin five years ago would now be able to see a gain of roughly 2,600%, but this isn\u2019t the greatest possible return on that investment.
