The original version appeared first on the Bloomberg Terminal.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2>Background<\/h2>\n<p>After displacing Tesla Inc. as the world\u2019s biggest electric vehicle maker, the next big challenge for China\u2019s BYD Co. will be spreading its wings overseas.<\/p>\n<p>BYD\u2019s profit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-03-29\/china-s-byd-has-no-plans-to-challenge-tesla-is-us-anytime-soon\">more than quintupled<\/a> last year after it sold a record number of EVs. However, BYD stock has stalled in the past three months despite the surge in sales and profits. With Tesla slashing prices to target the mass market, concerns over profitability have grown for BYD. Investors are concerned about profits,\u201d said Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Steve Man, who added that he doesn\u2019t see significant price reductions coming from BYD.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla has been aggressive in cutting prices, though steep markdowns took a toll on profitability, leading to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-04-21\/tesla-increases-price-of-model-s-x-in-us-after-shares-slump\">price increases<\/a> for Model S and X vehicles in the U.S. Meanwhile, BYD recently unveiled an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-04-22\/byd-11-450-ev-hatchback-set-to-reshape-china-s-first-car-market\">$11,450 electric hatchback<\/a> in China\u2019s already crowded entry-level vehicle market.<\/p>\n<p>Annual sales growth at BYD and Tesla is expected to slow until it falls below 20% by 2025. This is due in part to a maturing market, rising borrowing costs and a growing number of traditional car makers entering the EV market.<\/p>\n<p>BYD investors want to ensure continued growth and expansion even after the home market becomes saturated. Bloomberg Intelligence said spending on R&amp;D and marketing could rise amid \u200ctougher competition and as BYD makes a global sales push.<\/p>\n<p>BYD is set to build its first overseas passenger vehicle plant in Thailand and is considering additional manufacturing opportunities in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-02-24\/china-s-byd-has-three-southeast-asian-countries-vying-for-plant\">Philippines, Vietnam and Indonesia<\/a>. However, BYD is off to a slower start in terms of exports than competitors, with Hyundai Motor Securities Co. marking exports at 7.4% of total sales during January and February 2023. In contrast, Tesla made about half of total sales overseas in 2022, while Hyundai Motor exported about 65%.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil, France, Italy, and five more countries, including the U.S., have BYD facilities, with its suppliers also mostly domiciled in China.
