Ahead of the decision, futures traders priced in a March increase while expecting a rate decrease in June.<\/p>\n<p>The rate increase was the ninth straight by the Fed and occurs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-03-22\/fed-opts-for-hike-and-see-in-gamble-crisis-will-stay-contained\">less than two weeks<\/a> after the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank, which was the second-biggest bank failure in U.S. history. Due to \u201cunusual and exigent\u201d circumstances, the Fed launched an emergency cash facility for banks to help limit contagion from SVB\u2019s downfall. However, he acknowledged uncertainty about how banking disruptions will affect lending conditions and the economy.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-03-22\/yellen-to-stress-no-protections-for-bank-owners-and-bondholders\">testified before Congress<\/a> that providing \u201cblanket\u201d deposit insurance to stabilize the banking system is off the table.<\/p>\n<h2>The issue<\/h2>\n<p>The Fed\u2019s projected year-end interest rate remained unchanged at 5.1%. However, with the updated dot plot, some officials are showing a slightly more hawkish stance.<\/p>\n<p>Stocks rose at the start of Powell\u2019s news conference, though a reversal occurred as the Fed hinted at further hikes. Yellen\u2019s comments also contributed to a selloff in equities, leading to declines by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-03-21\/stock-market-today-dow-s-p-live-updates?sref=s4jM8V8F\">all 22 stocks in the KBW Bank Index<\/a>.
