OpenAI is\u00a0now very well funded, courtesy of a $10 billion commitment from\u00a0Microsoft, but it does suggest that the moment we\u2019re in harbors opportunity for the little guys.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest challenge with artificial intelligence today is how to best use it, and startups will always have the advantage of being able to experiment more freely. The former has the\u00a0huge computational power and proprietary data troves needed to make a chatbot sound intelligent \u2014 and the other has the agency to try bold, and potentially foolish, things.<\/p>\n<p>One example is Urvin Soneta\u2019s Synth AI Labs Inc., an Indian startup whose software transcribes and summarizes audio conversations for\u00a0corporate customers. Soneta, 26,\u00a0said small companies\u00a0can own a niche and don\u2019t have to go after a giant\u00a0market from the start like a big tech company does.<\/p>\n<p>The Hong Kong-based startup Pantheon Lab Ltd. uses OpenAI\u2019s GPT-3\u00a0to power its product. Ivan Lau, the CEO, said Pantheon\u00a0doesn\u2019t have the resources to train its own large language models and has to rely on big companies like Meta Platforms Inc. to open-source their\u00a0language\u00a0libraries. Small companies focus on the applications people use while\u00a0the big ones\u00a0provide the raw materials \u2014 that\u2019s Lau\u2019s vision.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s plenty for big tech to be optimistic about, though. Cloud providers enjoy a disproportionate advantage, said Rathin Rawal, a PwC and Kearney alum who\u2019s incubating a new AI startup in Toronto. Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.\u2019s Daniel Zhang agrees. The chief executive officer said during the company\u2019s last earnings call that there\u2019ll be exponential growth in demand for computing power to support AI applications and that will be \u201ca big opportunity\u201d for Alibaba.<\/p>\n<p>China\u00a0presents a unique challenge that Silicon Valley is unlikely to crack. Chinese companies are rushing not just to create a smart chatbot but one that complies with the country\u2019s strict censorship rules. Baidu or Tencent Holdings Ltd. is much better practiced at implementing state diktats than any newcomers might hope to be.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div><div\n    class=\"bbg-column
