Electric vehicles accounted for 8.4% of all new car registrations in the first five months of the year \u2014\u00a0double the level for\u00a0all\u00a0of 2021 and 20 times higher than 2020. The waitlist could expand due to this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a reality car distributors are learning to deal with.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSupply chain disruptions aren\u2019t\u00a0making things easy, so we work closely with the manufacturers and also manage customer expectations,\u201d said Cheong Yan Pang, a managing director at\u00a0Sime Darby Motor Holdings Ltd., a distributor of\u00a0BMW\u00a0and\u00a0BYD Co.\u00a0electric cars.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a similar story for Sabrina Sng, a managing director at car dealership\u00a0Wearnes Automotive Pte., who\u2019s in charge of\u00a0Polestar\u00a0EVs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have limited stock and it\u2019s sporadic,\u201d she said. \u201cIt didn\u2019t help with the Shanghai lockdown. Iswaran\u00a0said earlier this month he expects demand to continue to rise. The nation wants to phase out internal combustion-engine vehicles by 2040 and replace most of them with EVs.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore is expected to lead the region in new EVs as a percentage of all vehicle sales, with at least one-third of all cars sold on the island forecast\u00a0to be electric by 2030, according to a\u00a0BloombergNEF\u00a0report last year.<\/p>\n<p>The city-state is still in its very early stages of adoption, however, with just 1,739 electric cars registered last year, and 1,116 in the first five months of this year,\u00a0Land Transport Authority\u00a0data show. That compares with 2021 passenger EV sales of 9,015\u00a0in Thailand\u00a0and 718\u00a0in Indonesia, according to BNEF estimates . It\u2019s\u00a0one of the world\u2019s most expensive places to buy a car with steep excise and registration duties. People must also bid for a limited number of car-ownership permits, known as certificates of entitlement, that are auctioned by the government.<\/p>\n<p>Lower registration fees and improved charging infrastructure are helping\u00a0fuel demand for EVs. The government has targets to equip 2,000 public housing car parks with chargers by 2025, and install a network of 60,000 chargers across the island by 2030\u00a0in an effort to spur\u00a0uptake.<\/p>\n<p>That should alleviate concerns mass market car buyers\u00a0have on the feasibility of EVs as their primary vehicle, said BNEF analyst\u00a0Allen Tom Abraham.<\/p>\n<p>Among the potential new customers is Justin Chiam, a 42-year-old engineer who\u2019s\u00a0considering swapping out his Subaru Forester SUV for a battery-powered BYD Atto 3. It retails for about S$80,000 ($58,000) and an ownership permit will cost around S$100,000.<\/p>\n<p>The island is currently dotted with about 2,500 charging ports and Chiam has\u00a0mapped out his charging route. \u201cNow I just pump and go at the petrol kiosk,\u201d he said. \u201cI think for EVs it\u2019s a whole new way of living in a sense that you\u2019ve got to integrate that part into your lifestyle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Lim is enjoying his new Taycan, for which he paid about S$370,000, plus almost S$100,000 for an ownership permit.<\/p>\n<p>He finds it \u201cjust as powerful\u201d as the\u00a0Porsche 911\u00a0he test drove several times.
