Credit analyst Himanshu Bakshi discusses the 2024 outlook for Canadian banks. About C$128 billion of mortgages originated by Canada's five biggest banks' are suffering negative amortization, and if rates stay higher for much longer, it will pressure these borrowers at renewal. This puts lenders' asset quality at risk and may force them to hold more capital.
