Drowning in Crude: Can Shale Survive an Oversupplied Market

Global crude oil supply is expected to comfortably outpace demand in 2026, pushing global oil balances into surplus, and weighing on crude prices. Aside from OPEC spare capacity, US shale producers are considered the 'swing barrels' of the oil market as they can adapt to changing macro conditions and commodity price levels in a matter of months.

As prices drift lower and slip below $60/barrel, industry participants are watching closely for either a slowdown in production, or for signs that the industry is more resilient than before, and can control costs to ride out this bearish wave.

In this AskBNEF, Wayne Tan, Head of Oil Markets Research and Tara Narayanan, Head of Upstream Oil will join BNEF's Managing Director Ashish Sethia to discuss the outlook for US oil production, how costs stack up against prices, and how global balances will evolve next year.
