Pelosi Says Election Could Give Democrats Control of U.S. House

  • Chances may hinge on Clinton’s margin over Trump, she says
  • 30-seat gain would give party its first majority since 2011

U.S. House minority leader Nancy Pelosi said she thinks her party could win control of the chamber in the Nov. 8 elections.

“I believe that we would if the election were held today,” Pelosi, a California Democrat, said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” program. “We’d have a good chance to do so.”

Democrats need to gain 30 seats to win control of the House for the first time since 2011. Analysts say their chances are better in the Senate, where Republicans now hold 54 of the 100 seats.

Pelosi said the Democrats’ chances in the House may depend on whether Hillary Clinton can defeat Donald Trump in the presidential election by a large enough margin.
