Marco Rubio Hires Hill Aide Jonathan Slemrod as Policy Director

The Republican presidential candidate staffs up.

Senator Marco Rubio has hired Capitol Hill staffer Jonathan Slemrod as policy director for his presidential campaign, spokesman Alex Conant confirmed to Bloomberg.

Slemrod, whose focus is on budget and tax policy, has been an aide to Senator John Cornyn of Texas, the second-ranking Republican in the Senate. His other former bosses on Capitol Hill include Representative Paul Ryan, now the Ways and Means chairman, and then-Representative Jeff Flake, now a senator from Arizona.

The move by Slemrod, a graduate of the University of Michigan, is a homecoming of sorts. He was part of Rubio's Senate staff starting in 2011, right after the Republican was first elected to the chamber.

In recent weeks, Rubio has escalated his pursuit of the Republican nomination in early primary states, making the first trip of his candidacy to Nevada this week to meet with conservative activists and local entrepreneurs.

Slemrod didn't respond immediately to an e-mail seeking comment.

Before it's here, it's on the Bloomberg Terminal.
