Hillary Clinton Makes Surprise Appearance at eBay Event

The appearance comes as she appears to be winding down her corporate speaking engagements ahead of a presidential campaign launch.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton speaks on stage with Gates Foundation Co-Chair Melinda Gates and Clinton Foundation Vice Chair Chelsea Clinton for the official release of the No Ceilings Full Participation Report which coincides with the start of the 59th session of the United Nations' Commission on the Status of Women on March 9, 2015 in New York City.

Hillary Clinton spoke Wednesday to 500 eBay executives at a women's-issues event in San Jose, Calif., USA Today reported.

In the unannounced appearance—the newspaper described her as a “surprise guest”—Clinton did not address the controversy over her personal e-mail use as secretary of state, which has been dogging her for more than a week. The e-mail revelations prompted her to hold a press conference on Tuesday where she denied wrongdoing.

Clinton on Wednesday spoke instead on a favorite theme of hers—women's empowerment. “If we apply Silicon Valley's successful approach to the issues of gender and inequality, I'm sure we can make progress,” she said. Hiring and promoting men “is hardwired, so we have to go the extra mile to unwrap it,” she said.

Clinton's appearance comes as she appears to be winding down her corporate speaking engagements ahead of a presidential campaign launch in April. The gigs have drawn scrutiny because of her reported $300,000 fee. Spokesman Nick Merrill did not immediately respond to a request for comment about her pay for this event.

Before it's here, it's on the Bloomberg Terminal.
