Roberts Drops the "S" Bomb in Fierce Kansas Race

A warning about a threat to the American way of life.

Kansas Senator Pat Roberts, facing an unexpectedly tough re-election race, has begun invoking the S word as he explains what he thinks is going wrong with America: Socialism.

"There's a palpable fear among Kansans all across this state that the America that we love and cherish and honor will not be the same America for our kids and grandkids," Roberts said at an event yesterday in Dodge City. "And that's wrong. That's very wrong."

He continued: “One of the reasons that I’m running is to change that. There’s an easy way to do it. I’ll let you figure it out. But at any rate, we have to change course because our country is headed for national socialism. That’s not right. It’s changing our culture. It’s changing what we’re all about.”

The video was posted on the YouTube account of American Bridge, a Democratic opposition research group. Roberts made the remarks as he campaigned with former Republican Senate leader Bob Dole — known for his moderate positions and bipartisan dealmaking.

Before it's here, it's on the Bloomberg Terminal.
