Bloomberg 35: Making a global impact through long-term partnerships
November 15, 2016
Bloomberg 35 is a series celebrating our company’s 35th anniversary, by spotlighting 35 of our non-profit partners and the people at Bloomberg who help these organizations reach their goals.
Last month, we featured three of our partner organizations with local efforts near Bloomberg’s New York headquarters. Here, we highlight some of our earliest global partners, with missions that span the globe.
Room to Read
Room to Read envisions a world in which all children can pursue a quality education, reach their full potential, and contribute to their community and the world.
Since 2008, Bloomberg has helped Room to Read’s quest by publishing local-language books in India, funding the creation of half a million books in 10 languages, supporting Room to Read’s Girls’ Education Program in Asia and by providing reading materials to youth in South Africa.
Bloomberg and our employees partner with Room to Read, providing children in the Americas, Asia and Africa with the life skills they need to succeed in school and beyond.
“There is no more fundamental skill than the ability to read. Without it, participating meaningfully in the global economy is an impossibility. That is why I felt so strongly about working with Room to Read: the impact of giving the power of literacy is profound.” – Peter Grauer, Chairman of Bloomberg LP
Tate Modern
Tate Modern is one of the world’s most dynamic museums committed to offering new ways for visitors to enjoy and engage with modern and contemporary art.
Bloomberg Philanthropies has supported Tate Modern since the gallery opened in 2000, by developing cutting-edge digital tools for interactive visitor experiences – including the first hand-held digital tour, which won a BAFTA Award for technical innovation.
Through our Bloomberg Connects initiative, we’ve launched mobile apps, immersive displays and dynamic tools – like the Drawing Bar and interactive Timeline of Modern Art – for Tate visitors to engage with art in a whole new way.
“I’m hugely proud to see how Bloomberg has worked with cultural institutions like Tate, to help them set an industry standard for audience interaction and engagement – bringing art to life in a way that is completely immersive and revolutionary.” – Jean-Paul Zammitt, Vice-Chairman and Chief Commercial Officer, Bloomberg L.P.
Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders)
Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) – also known as Doctors Without Borders – provides medical and humanitarian aid worldwide to people with the greatest needs, including delivering rapid response disaster relief during natural disasters, epidemics, conflicts and famines.
Bloomberg has supported MSF since 1999 and our employees have been involved in raising money for emergency response and volunteering time to help those in need.
“It’s a privilege to work with such generous and motivated colleagues around the world. The contributions that Bloomberg Philanthropies has made to Medecins Sans Frontieres and other disaster relief programs we’ve given to in times of need have made a life-or-death difference, from Tokyo to Louisiana to Italy, and many more places.” – Nanette Smith, Global Head of Philanthropy and Engagement at Bloomberg LP
The British Museum
The British Museum has one of the world’s largest and most comprehensive collections of works dedicated to human history and culture. They reach different audiences in the UK through initiatives and digital innovation including an online database of 3.5 million objects from their collections.
Bloomberg has supported the British Museum since 2002, including making special exhibitions — like the acclaimed Field for the British Isles – possible.
“As a member of the Board of Trustees of the British Museum, I’ve seen firsthand how Bloomberg’s support has helped the museum make its collections available to greater and more diverse audiences in London, the UK and worldwide.” – John Micklethwait, Editor-In-Chief at Bloomberg LP
These are a few examples of the many global non-profits Bloomberg is proud to support. Keep checking back for future installments of Bloomberg 35, as we continue to highlight our partner organizations all over the world working to ensure better, longer lives for the greatest number of people.
Bloomberg LP was founded 35 years ago and helped revolutionize the financial industry – making it more fair, efficient and dynamic – and that spirit carries through into our philanthropic work. Bloomberg 35 is a series to celebrate our company’s 35th anniversary, by spotlighting throughout the next twelve months 35 non-profit partners–as well as the people at Bloomberg who help these organizations reach their goals.
