Hello, from the other side. This is the first of what will be regular daily newsletters for Bloomberg Opinion. Some of you may recognize my name from my previous long-term incarnation as a journalist for the Financial Times, where I worked from 1990 until a few weeks ago. This newsletter will attempt to keep doing  what I offered there, while drawing on the data and reporting resources of Bloomberg.

I try to take a long view (also the title of one of my old columns in another life), and put market moves in the context of other markets and asset classes, and of their own history. As we can only reach the long term by first surviving the short term, I will also try to explain what has just happened whenever markets get interesting. Note, however, that it is often easier to predict markets five years from now than predict their direction tomorrow.
