  • 00:00Small businesses around the country were hit particularly hard during Covid and the restaurants shops and salons of downtown Boston were certainly no exception. And while not quite back to normal the recovery has been picking up. Small business is making a comeback. Al's State Street Cafe is owned by Al Castello a colorful local legend with plenty of Boston attitude. His popular shops were packed for lunch every weekday before the pandemic. Then in March of 2020 everyone was gone. There was no one here was tumbleweeds out there for the first few months. We didn't know what to do. We don't know when people going to come back. And then people started coming back. And here comes another variant and then slow again. Federal state and local grants helped to accelerate the recovery and even big business jumped in to help small business. Small businesses were more fragile than some of the bigger businesses in the Commonwealth. So the chamber mobilized with some of its bigger employers. We set up a program called Small Business Strong and the essence of that was we got all of our bigger employers to donate time so that if you were a small business and you needed an accountant or you needed a lawyer would provide one. The Cask 'n Flagan is a landmark sports bar sitting in the shadow of the Green Monster at Fenway Park. Red Sox fans have been coming here to celebrate or commiserate since the 1960s. Assistant general manager John Daly has seen a sharp increase in business. We've come back very strong. You see a lot of people that want to support us want to be out want to have fun. A lot of people missed the social aspect of going out to a bar and meeting with friends they haven't seen in a long time. And it's only going to get better. The Black Dog is a family run New England icon black dog apparel grew from the popularity of the original restaurant on Martha's Vineyard. The pandemic forced a major consolidation of their business. CEO Dan Pucillo had to make some hard decisions when they shut down the businesses. At that point March were about 190 employees. By the end of the next week we were down to about five employees. So we were really in a tough spot. We rebounded now and are at the highest point we've been since a pandemic. They all share similar stories doing well before the pandemic. Tough times during a lockdown a slow but steady climb back to a new normal and hope for the future. "Make it nice or make it twice!"

Boston Small Business: Returning to a New Normal

July 1st, 2022, 8:35 PM GMT+0000

The Covid-19 pandemic ravaged small businesses across the country, impacting business owners in downtown Boston, who rely heavily on the countless workers populating office buildings so prevalent in the area. When the city shut down, almost all of the local merchants' customers disappeared. Some businesses were able to hang on with takeout orders or online sales, but most had to lay off workers just to stay afloat. Many small businesses shut down permanently. We speak with three Boston-based businesses about the challenges they faced over the past two years, and how they are guiding their businesses toward a hopeful future. (Source: Bloomberg)
