  • 00:00Welcome and thank you for taking time I know how busy and crazy Davos can get. So we I mean for all of everyone right time here I want to begin with you. You know the named global citizen. The name itself implies or rather makes it really clear that the onus is on US citizens and each one of us to do our part to end extreme poverty. What's the single most important and effective tool we can all use to do that . Well I'm a big believer that the power of citizens is to mobilize en masse to achieve collective change and our mission at Global Citizen is we're a movement of millions of citizens around the world taking collective action for the eradication of extreme poverty and the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. And I really believe that the power that you have as a citizen you can often feel so disempowered as one individual. But when you use your collective voice it's incredibly powerful. Let me give you an example. A couple of years ago Global Citizen launched what we called the Twitter invasion of Norway where we sent 500000 tweets to the prime minister of Norway Erna Solberg. On one night together with the comedian Stephen Colbert and Erna Solberg called me the next day and she said you come to Oslo . And I said as we're sitting here and she said Hugh will you please turn off the tweets. I'm in the middle of a local election and I can't see any tweets from the Norwegians. I can only see global citizens. Would you turn fantastic ask. I said well we can't really turn them off until you respond. So she came on stage at our Global Citizen Festival in Central Park in front of 60000 people and she announced 250 million dollars for girls education two weeks later. I mean that's the power of a movement working together. Well some citizens of the world like you have incredibly powerful massive global platforms. How can you use your platform to inches towards a sustainable development goals. I mean 2030 is not that far. Bianca . Absolutely. And it's been five years. And the promise that was made by 193 countries and governments of 193 countries including India are just not doing it fast enough. So now who do we rely upon . Why are we as global citizens here at West today is to implore upon high net worth individuals multinationals people who can actually afford to give large chunks of money because the amount of money that we need and the gap that we have right now is at 350 billion US dollars per year. That's how much money we need to be able to eradicate extreme poverty and not just poverty extreme poverty which is people living under a dollar 90 a day . So it's going to require a lot of muscle. It's going to require big movements. And that's what we're here for me as someone who has who has a public platform and the ability to leverage that platform to have people feel and understand what we're trying to say give the message across of what global citizen stands for and ammunition in people's hands to be able to make that difference. Like you said collectively our voices are so loud . We just have to have a platform to be able to do it. And global citizen gives people that platform a safe space where we can collectively as citizens of humanity raise a voice. Because if the privileged privileged society's privileged countries and the privileged don't take responsibility no one else is going to stand for people who live in extreme poverty. And that's the ultimate human suffering. And the point is you don't have to be a billionaire to help. You don't know. You don't. I mean we want every citizen there. Their money will really really help and want your money. Everybody listen you don't have to be free. And at this point we need everyone. I mean there are two thousand one hundred and fifty billionaires on the planet whose collective net worth is ten trillion dollars. And if they all gave at the same rate that Bill and Melinda Gates currently give that alone would be enough to finance the sustainable development goals twice over. So if everyone was just as generous as Bill Gates that's enough. We don't. Ellen Melinda Gates give about 45 percent of their net worth annually into their foundation which helps so many charities around the world . And and I mean fun fact his money is increased ever since he has been donating. So you can head back to Haiti and solve the world's problems all at once. But can you really do that. Can you rely on the power of the public to make real change without offending political and economic systems to where they exist. Well I believe that ultimately we need compassionate capitalism. You know we're not talking about upending the system. We're talking about making the system work for people living in extreme poverty because I believe capitalism has actually lifted millions of people out of extreme poverty around the world. Just look at what's happened in China and their goal is to eradicate extreme poverty by the end of this year. And so you can work within the economic system to do so but you need to ultimately make sure it works for the benefit of everyone and strengthens the middle class. And I think that's where we ultimately need those corporations who are stepping up like never before. We've got the CEOs of many of the Fortune 100 and 500 companies behind Global Citizen now who are like Chuck Robins of Cisco Hans Vest Berg of Horizon Ed Bastian of Delta who are providing extraordinary leadership behind these issues. But we've also got you know phenomenal capitalists like our chairman Chris Dudley who runs CVC . Capital who's committing to give away such a large percentage of his own wealth to tackle these issues you need ultra high net worth individuals. You need the private sector to step up at a rate we've never seen before because this is the critical year to Priyanka earlier point. If we don't finance a sustainable development goals this year to the tune of 350 billion per annum then in five years from now that figure will be 400 billion . Why. Because of population growth. So now is the opportunity to take action. You know there are so many causes you could support in the world and I know there are organizations clamoring for your attention and for you to support the cause . I'm curious why did you pick global citizen. Well I've worked with many organizations in the past and have lent my name to people that I feel are doing real work. What I love about global citizen and now I've worked with them for about four years is that every single person on the planet. And I've always had this since I was 17 years old. And I realize that a platform can make a difference. I was crowned Miss World when I was 18 and suddenly I was like oh people wanted to listen to what I have to say. I better have something good to say. And I started checking myself. I come from a very philanthropic. I come from very philanthropic parents . So it was sort of imbibed in me . But I think what I love about global citizen is how it gives ammunition to everyday people to be able to make actionable change. It's not just about you giving a small donation or as much as you can. It's about you using your voice. And every single person's voice matters . It empowers global citizen empowers every citizen of the world to be able to make a difference in the world that they want to see. And that is extremely powerful and powerful and the power of entertainment. I mean the cause at this year. I mean if you want to make the announcement you made it big and you're gonna make a big announcement here on our stage right now. Go for it . We're having we're doing we're doing this thing called a Global Go Live which has seven concerts in five continents at the same time on the same day which is September 25th. Wow. So 26 September days IBEX which is also the birthday of the Sustainable Development Goals. But fabulous sets are going to have the most incredible talent from around the world that are going to participate. And the people who are going to come to this concert cannot buy a ticket. You have to earn your tickets . And how do you on the ticket you go on to global Global Citizens app and you actually that you're going to get a lot of information on Global Citizens app and you can take action. And through all the actions that you dig you earn points. And when you earn enough points you can get free tickets to these concerts around the world. It's amazing that. So way to target . And yeah it's incredible. And it's going to be on like five continents. So it's going to be in Asia across Latin America North America across Europe. It's going to be across Africa . It's going to be literally the whole planet coming together for this one moment because I don't know about you but if you've heard across the world economic so familiar economic forms so much talk about climate change and tackling extreme poverty . Yeah. This is our opportunity to unite the whole planet as one to actually make this final push for the eradication of extreme poverty to tackle climate change. And I think that's amazing . Yeah . So clever so incentivized and to use the power of entertainment and we have amazing artists like Coldplay. Metallica. Billy ISE. Miley Cyrus. You have. Well I'm not going to alongside Hugh Jackman alongside Trevor Noah and some incredible like . And we can all choose which country we show up and rave about country used. But you'll have to earn your tickets. We have to . Yes. If you haven't got the Global Citizen app download it now because we want everyone here in this room to be part of it . We'd love to have you there on September 26. It's going to be the moment the biggest moment since Live 8. You know that's amazing. Historical. Absolutely. We have. We've all made a note. We'll all be there. Bianca one of the causes you've been passionate about for a very long time is gender equality . And I covered you on one of your UNICEF trips. We went to a village in Maharashtra . And the one thing that struck me was you were really encouraging the young girls there to you know continue with the tailoring business or to or to sell them. All right. Sergeant I remember this young girl very well. And Bianca's main message to the girls in that village was you have to be financially independent . You place a real massive premium on that on young girls being financially independent. Well I have to say and give this credit to my mother she ingrain that in my brain since I was a very very young girl. She said every girl needs to be financially independent. So you're not just someone's wife or someone's daughter or someone's sister . Your identity will will be defined by your ability to be independent. And that comes with finance in the world that we live today. And when I met size nine I'll never forget this girl and I'll take two minutes telling the story. We were doing a UNICEF trip and this girl comes from an extremely poor family did not have the ability to go to school and her mom used to stitch. So parents got really sick. Her mom used to sew and she started the business within her village of creating like blouses for saris or shirts or mending buttons or you know. And slowly she increased that business into like she bought how many she had I think for sewing machines in her little hut. And she created a business through which she financed her parents ailments and was able to take get them treatment. And she didn't go to school. And life skill is such an important part of you know developing countries where people may not have the access to go to school but they learn life skills and have the ability to find their feet on the ground. And especially for girls because you know as much as we say guys poverty is sexist . Women get. Women get the brunt of it the most. There is there is such the kind of problems that women deal with culturally in so many ways. Legally men don't have to deal with as much and especially in poor places. So it was such a win to see Saddam do what she did. Absolutely. She did credit you. She kept saying Priyanka Didi told me to do this. Didi is older sister . So it was it really was. You had such an impact. You know you are a role model to many young girls around the world Priyanka . You've been ambitious and you know you've achieved a lot of international success as a result of that. But there's a lot of judgment attached to young girls being ambitious. And that's a stigma we have to work on. We have to remove that because if we don't we're going to end up like we are today where just one in every five delegates at the World Economic Forum in Davos is a woman. How do we tackle that. The stigma around being fiercely ambitious for young girls. Well first and foremost we are still at a place where you know a lot of countries around the world women literally makes a third of what men make for the same job . And that is not OK. The example that you used about the representation of women in Davos that is not OK. When a woman is ambitious she's she's too pushy or she's too bossy or she's she's not nice because women should be nice when they conduct business. But when men are when men put their foot down they're admired and they're looked up to. Oh my gosh. He's so like courageous. And he's such a leader strong. It's going to take a generation of women to fight through these these stereotypes and push through them. And here these mean vile things and actually have ourselves represented in in positions of power . And that will happen by us helping each other and holding a hand out for each other. If you think about it this is probably the first time in history where we can so vocally see women pull each other up. And that's only because opportunity is being created for women. The lack of opportunity made women fight each other for such a long time. I mean the women before us the women that fought for our right to vote the women that fought for our right to drive or to have jobs. They're the reason you and I can sit here today and have this conversation. Absolutely . So. I'm supremely grateful for them. But the generation of women that we're seeing right now have empowered girls like Gretta or girls like Nadia or Emma to stand in front of world leaders and demand their attention. Because our generation has has held each other up and encouraged each other and said you know what. I got you. Girl love girl power. Empower each other even in my industry. I mean when I started working in the business about 20 years ago the guys decided who was going to be cast right. Yeah. Today I can have a conversation with a colleague of mine and say you know what you want to produce something because I like this part and I think would be great . But for you I mean. Hey Riz. Hey Nicole you want to make big little lies. And that's what happened. Let's do it. Yeah let's do it. We have taken charge of our own lives and that is just an extremely wonderful legacy to leave for the next generation. I want my kids to grow up in a world where world leaders have heard out greeters grievances. You know August listen to this generation of girls. Speaking of Gretta she did say recently that the boomers have left the millennials down and you know they haven't done enough to produce real change. You both are very young and you're talking to a roomful of people . I think we're a little bit older than you next year. How were you so sure that you can convince the generation above you to act. Well I think that we're sure because we're already seeing it happen. I mean I think that I'm I myself am a millennial. And we're fortunate in that we are seeing the private sector and we are seeing philanthropy really start to step up. For example yesterday we co hosted a summit with Forbes where with Forbes magazine we talked about the role of philanthropy and we released a new index index ranked in the top 25 givers based on not just how much they pledged to their foundation or to their donor advised fund but actually how much they actually give to achieve the sustainable development goals per annum because there's a big difference . And we also have been working in partnership with Tonio the world's leading SEO advisory firm on engaging the Fortune 100 and Fortune 500 CEOs to be a big part of this movement. And we're seeing brands like Procter Procter and Gamble from Delta Variety and Cisco. We're seeing them step up at a rate we've never seen before. And these CEOs who are all running huge public listed companies are saying you know what we have to put sustainability first because if we don't we won't have a consumer market in the future. I was with the CEO of Delta last week at CBS and Ed Bastian got up on stage and he announced as part of our initiative initiative called the Great Green Wall as part of their climate abatement where they're going to work with the United Nations to plant a forest the width of Africa called the Great Green Wall all designed to encourage and abate climate change. And so he's taking this very seriously. And I think that a CEO that doesn't take it seriously is not going to survive very long as we see all around the world. On that note and a note of positive positivity and optimism. Thank you both very much. And we wish you good luck. Thank you so much . Thank you .
