  • 00:00QUESTION, THE NUMBERS OF CASES PICKING UP IN WUHAN BUT IN OTHER CITIES. ONE OF THE FIRST THING IT COMES TO MIND WHEN SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPENS IN CHINA IS IS THE GOVERNMENT BEING TRANSPARENT? ARE WE SEEING THE WHOLE PICTURE? WHAT IS YOUR VIEW > ? THERE IS THERE CONCERN AMONG MANY THAT THERE COULD BE SOMETHING OF A COVER-UP. > > I THINK THIS CASE HAS BEEN THERE FOR SOME TIME. THERE WERE QUITE A FEW CASES STARTING FROM WUHAN. WE HAD NEWS IN THAT PARTICULAR CITY IN CENTRAL CHINA FOR QUITE SOME TIME. IT IS NOT JUST HEARD YESTERDAY. BUT I THINK THE GOVERNMENT HAS TO DECIDE WHETHER, WHAT ARE THE FORCES, ? UNTIL VERY RECENTLY WE FOUND ABOUT 200 CASES NOW. IN GENERAL, THIS CASES OF PNEUMONIA IS NOT AS DEADLY ALSO AS THREATENING AS SARS, FOR EXAMPLE. WE DON ' T WANT TO CREATE UNNECESSARY PANIC. WE HAVE CONTROL. REALLY IF ANYTHING GOES WRONG. I THINK THE GOVERNMENT HAS PAID A LOT OF ATTENTION TO THIS. THEY ARE DISPATCHING DOCTORS AND INSPECTION TEAMS INTO DIFFERENT REGIONS. PATIENTS ARE SEPARATED AND, ALSO, THERE IS A SPECIAL TREATMENT BEING ISSUED TO OTHER REGIONS. I THINK IN GENERAL THIS IS UNDER CONTROL. MOST IMPORTANT, SO FAR FROM WHAT WE CAN SEE IT IS NOT AS DEADLY AS WE EXPECTED. BUT THE CAUSE IS UNKNOWN. THAT IS A LITTLE STRANGE. TOM: THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION IS WORKING WITH THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT TRYING TO GET TO GRIPS WITH THE EXTENT OF THIS VIRUS. LET ' S SWITCH FOCUS TO THE CASE OF QUALITY. -- OF HUAWEI. THIS IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE THE COF WHO -- THE CFO IN CANADA WILL BE GOING INTO COURT TO ARGUE THE EXTRADITION CASE. THE U.S. GOING TO EXTRADITE HER OVER OF NUMBER OF DIFFERENT ISSUES. TO WHAT EXTENT IS THEIR DISAPPOINTMENT WITHIN THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT THEY WEREN ' T ABLE TO GET MORE IN TERMS OF CONCESSIONS FROM THE U.S. ON THE SITUATION FACING HUAWEI? ALL THE REPORTING SEEMS TO SUGGEST THE RESTRICTIONS ON THIS COMPANY ARE GOING TO CONTINUE AND THE CHANCES ARE THAT SHE WILL BE EXTRADITED. WE ' LL FIND OUT LATER THIS WEEK. > > I THINK THIS IS REALLY UNFORTUNATE. CHINA IS GETTING REALLY DEVELOPED VERY FAST. AND PROBABLY HUAWEI IS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF GLOBAL DEVELOPMENT. TAKING THE PAIN AND ALSO THE CRITICISM FOR CHINA FOR A LOT OF MISTRUST. BUT I THINK THISE CASE IS REALLY, SHE ' S REALLY INNOCENT. BECAUSE FROM WHAT WE CAN SEE, ACTUALLY, THISE C CASE SINCE LAST YEAR, ALREADY YEAR NOW. NOW WE HAVE THIS PHASE ONE DEAL. THE SENTIMENT IS GOOD. WE SHOULD SOLVE THIS ISSUE. MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE -- THE MENG VIOLATES KNEW AT THE BEGINNING THAT HUAWEI WAS HAVING A DEAL WITH IRAN. THIS IS NOT -- SH HUAWEI ' S NOT HIDING FROM THIS. THIS IS REALLY NOT ANY CONSPIRACY AGAINST THE RULES. SECOND, I THINK THE, YOU KNOW, CANADA IS NOT INVOLVED IN THIS. IT DID NOT VIOLATE ANY CANADIAN LAWS. REALLY, THIS IS NOT REALLY -- APPLY THAT HARSH, ON HER ARREST. SHE HAS BEEN TRAVELING TO MANY COUNTRIES. NO COUNTRIES ARRESTED HER. JUST COME TO CANADA AND GET ARRESTED. THAT SEEMS NOT FAIR. IRAN DEAL HAS BEEN A LONG TIME, OVER 10 YEARS AGO. WHY AT THIS CRITICAL MOMENT AND EVEN PRESIDENT TRUMP SAID THIS IS PART OF THE DEAL. NOW THE DEAL IS SIGNED. SHE SHOULD GET A FAIR TRIAL AND -- TREATED AND GET RELEASED I HOPE. YVONNE: I THINK, THE STILL WANT SOMETHING GIVEN THE FACT THAT CHINA -- TH THAT CANADA STILL WANT SOMETHING. IN LIGHT OF THIS ARREST. I ' M JUST WONDERING WHAT IS THE CHANCE OF THIS BECOMING MORE OF A LEGAL ISSUE TO ONE THAT IS MORE POLITICALLY MOTIVATED? > > WELL, I THINK THAT YOU ' RE RIGHT. I THINK CERTAINLY WE WOULD PROBABLY SEE SOME TIT FOR TAT THERE. BUT, ON THE OTHER HAND, I THINK -- TO THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM. THE DIGITAL SYSTEM IS PROBABLY REASONABLE IN LOCAL CONDITIONS. BUT ACTUALLY, IF WE HAVE THE WISDOM, IF WE TRUST -- TO STOP THIS ISSUE BY ITSELF. CANADA ARRESTED MENG IN THE FIRST PLACE. THAT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED TO BE RELEASED. I ' M SURE THINGS WILL BE RESOLVED AFTER THAT. BUT I THINK, IT ' S REALLY IMPORTANT THAT, YOU KNOW, SHE GET A FAIR TREATMENT AND A FAIR HEARING AND SAME FOR -- IN CHINA AS WELL. I HOPE THEY WILL ALL BE TREATED FAIRLY EQUALLY. DAVID: ASSUMING CANADA FINDS LEGAL MERIT TO KEEP HER. SHE DOEST NOT GET RELEASED, DO YOU THINK THAT THREATENS ANYTHING THAT WAS FORMALIZED LAST WEEK, THE FORMALIZATION OF THE TRADE TRUCE BETWEEN THE U.S. AND CHINA? > > WELL, I THINK THAT IS REALLY VERY UNFORTUNATE, BECAUSE IT LOOKS LIKE CANADA WAS CAUGHT IN BETWEEN THIS TRADE WAR. WHICH I DON ' T THINK IT WAS NECESSARY FOR CANDIDATE TO GET IN THERE. -- FOR CANADA TO GET IN THERE. CANADA AND CHINA HAS SUCH A LONG FRIENDSHIP. A CANADIAN DOCTOR WHO DIED IN CHINA HELPING CHINESE. THIS THING, THE THING THAT HAPPENED IS SO STRONG. THAT MENG DID NOT VIOLATE ANY CANADIAN LAW. WAY BEFORE MADAM MENG GOT INVOLVED THEY KNEW THAT HUAWEI WAS DOING BUSINESS WITH IRAN. THIRDLY, CANADA WAS NOT INVOLVED IN THE SANCTIONS AGAINST IRAN. BOA OBAMA EVEN LIFTED THE SANCTIONS. OBAMA ALREADY HAD LIFTED THE SANCTIONS. SO, EVEN TRACING BACK 10 YEARS OF A VERY OLD CASE, -WHICH IS- AT THE VERY BEGINNING OF THAT AS WELL. WHAT ARE THE REASONS TO ARREST MADAME MENG? SHE DIDN ' T VIOLATE ANY CANADIAN LAWS. SHE WAS UNFAIRLY TREATED AT THE AIRPORT. SEARCHED AND KEPT FOR HOURS BEFORE ANY HEARING. THERE IS A HOST OF ISSUES THAT NEEDS TO BE LOOKED INTO. AND REALLY I THINK WE SHOULD REALLY RELEASE HER. TOM: HOPEFULLY WE WILL GET SOME CLARITY ON THE MENG WANZHOU CASE. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FROM THE CENTER FOR CHINA GLOBALIZATION. COMING UP, BIADAIDEN SAYS IT IS
