    • 00:00Tom Watson the deputy leader at the Labour Party resigned last night. Who do you think should step up to take his place. Well I've thought about that. I mean Tom's done a good job as deputy leader's done lots of stuff around sugar and about the media and take him to task. I thought very carefully about who should replace Tom. And after giving it some thought. I will be throwing my hat in the ring. That's big news . That's a big job. I mean he and you have been someone who has encountered racism. And that's been a very public thing with the Lib Dems lately. There's been anti-Semitism within your party there some being some Islamophobia within the Tory party . How are you going to potentially if you get that position counter all of that within your political party. Yes I think I've got a track record of countering holding people to account around race and equality and justice. I've got a track record of being so very supportive to our leader Jeremy Corbyn and ensuring that the Labour Party is on the front foot. And what I want to do is build on that. I can't believe I'm talking about my manifesto. I haven't even written it yet. You've got me talking about this already. So. So what I want to do is kind of build on all of that. I mean the Labour Party is huge. I mean we have almost half a million members. We want to transform the country. We want to make sure the country is fairer. We want to dismantle the structural barriers that hold people back. Whether you are working class whether you're black or white wherever you woman whether you're LGBT. Q I plus you know there are structural barriers that hold people back. And I want to you know as deputy leader change all of that change the way the country is currently developing changed the way that we're seeing hate overcome hope and just change the script on all of that. I think that's important. And I think a Labour government will do that as well. We've got transformative policies that will just transform the way that we work and the world works really. But bringing it to break said the Labour Party plan hasn't been all that clear on the doorstep. What are you encountering. Are people understanding the message that you're now trying to get across. Yeah. The great thing about the doorstep and moving away from the Westminster bubble is that when you actually talk to people knock on their door always have a conversation with them. You get to understand what they're thinking about what the real issues are for them. Brexit comes up not all the time but when you say to people look in regards to how we leave the European Union would you like to have the final say. Would you like to be the decision makers. And they say yeah because I say you'll get to have another choice in what we will do in government. Is that what you want. And they say yes. So everybody understands that on the doorstep you know and it's really quite clear as well that have a choice. You know you will you can I believe on a deal that's negotiated or you can leave on the current deal that we have which is remain and reformed. People understand that they go right. Cool or I understand that. Now move on. How about my housing. You know how about universal credit. You know how about discrimination in the workplace. They move on to those everyday things that affects their everyday lives. And that's where we need to get to in the conversation. But how is Jeremy Corbyn going to negotiate what hasn't been able to be negotiated so far given that the Europeans have said they don't want to negotiate anymore. So there has been a parallel operation if you like in regards to what the government has been doing in regards to what the opposition has been doing. And actually Jeremy Care Shami and others in opposition have actually had more successful conversations with the European Union than the government. It's just that you know obviously we're not in government so we're not starting from scratch because it has been a parallel operation. So we have different red lines. We also have different priorities. Our priorities is to protect workers rights to protect the environment to protect our union as as a United Kingdom. Those are our priorities very different from the government. Priorities of the European Union knows that . And so there are actually more in line with our way of thinking . So it's not gonna be that difficult and it's not going to be that hard. It could be done very very quickly .
