  • 00:00Not Richard. One hundred days stocks on the way down. It seems like international investors are taking fright I suppose you've got to tell us why exactly. Well because the first hundred days many ways have been a mixed baggage for these loud mouth off the cuff statements of disregard the tent. I mean the test himself gave himself around six out of ten when it comes to his performance. But it seems his popularity is still strong. He got more than 60 percent in net satisfaction rating and more than 70 percent 76 percent in terms of trust ratings. It seems the Filipino people in the electorate are still giving him the benefit of the doubt because he's still in his honeymoon period . So perhaps for six months to one year we may expect him to still enjoy significant amount of popularity now nonetheless when it comes to detail it seems hundred days were short enough for him to make a huge dent when it comes to the infrastructure bottleneck in the Philippines to the traffic congestion in the country. But nonetheless we have also seen some positive movements when it comes to peace negotiations with the communist and Islamist insurgent groups. But the problem is that on other fronts we see some sort of problem there. This rhetoric seems to be a huge source of concern. The markets have been sending the signals as you mentioned a while ago the European charm Chamber of Commerce openly said that they're now struggling to get new investors to come to the Philippines because of the image that the Philippines rule and law situation has been deteriorating. But I've talked to a lot of businessmen investors in the Philippines and beyond and what they're saying is that perhaps the first three to six months will be a little bit difficult because in the third there's shock and awe approach to the issue of drugs. But it's possible that after six months to one year the situation would stabilize and in fact the rule in law a rule of law situation might improve and why that's a lot of them are hedging and still sticking around. And the fundamentals of the Philippine economy remain to be strong and IMF is talking about six point four percent growth for the country. And just talking to you seemed to be also recall Great Richard. I mean. We often hear about his misses in his why the first 100 days. But let's talk about where he's done well and I'm sure you will surprised how quickly he's been able to get such strong support out there as well and amassed power in the way that he has so quickly. Yeah definitely I think that Turkey is facing a paradox of power. On one hand he has been extremely efficient in amassing power not only in terms of his popularity he enjoys a super majority in the Philippine Congress both houses to a point that some people are talking about an essential rubber stamp when it comes to the Philippines ise legislature and that means that deterrent Dax gets tremendous amount of political capital to push for fundamental revisions of the Philippine constitution in order to push the envelope as far as the Philippines economic reforms are concerned their discussion of for instance revising constitution restrictions on equity and ownership for instance the Philippines has very strict 40 to 60 restriction in terms of foreign ownership of domestic assets. They may remove those things. Detroit is also asking for emergency powers so that he could expedite beading and implementation of big ticket infrastructure projects. And he may get that by December. So we may expect that by early next year there's gonna be an accelerated approach to dealing with the infrastructure bottleneck in the country. In the previous administration we saw a lot of underspending precisely because the previous administration was concerned with corruption this administration such as things to be much more adventurous when it comes to the infrastructure landscape . Richard Okay that's one thing but you know we don't go about the misses and the misses here what we have. Of course this these allegations of extrajudicial killings when it comes to the war on drugs and on on top of that of course that is something which is hugely popular amongst the electorate but is it actually illegal. Well that is the challenge the president is facing in the European Union and the United States in various ways of common criticizing him and I think that may explain his tirades and sometimes insulting remarks against the American president against the European Union among other things. But one thing is this Of the seven hundred thousand people have surrendered to the government probably out of sheer fear and a lot of them are actually perhaps drug dependence. So the problem for the third is that of course what can you do with seven hundred thousand people. I mean you cannot use fully violent means to deal with them and you cannot put them all in jail. So I think the only viable option forward for the debt that is rehabilitation and that is precisely the way where the European Union and probably the United States and United Nations would later on tried to come in and actually helping it's responsible that he may shift from a shocking are much more brutal strategy towards a much more public health centered on rehab visitation oriented strategy on drugs because you have several hundred thousand Richard. And that's the only way forward. I mean the most eyebrows of course have been raised abroad essentially when it comes to what he's been saying and the remarks that he's made to Barack Obama and various others now is he genuinely pivoting away from the United States towards Beijing. Well the first thing is this. He's a self-described socialist he's very much a product of Cold War third world these Non-Aligned Movement mentality. But I think the turkey is smart enough to realize that he cannot completely subvert existing military ties with the United States because that will definitely create backlash in the Philippine military which is very dependent on the United States which gives it intelligence logistics hundred million dollars of foreign military financing per year. Seventy five percent of the Philippines armaments come from the United States alone and not to mention last year the Filipinos gave a 92 percent approval rating to the United States. So I think smart enough to realize that he cannot completely sever ties. But remember he's going to visit China soon and he's going to negotiate and mother's identity in the South China Sea. So it's possible he may tinker with the parameters of security agreements with the U.S. in exchange for Chinese concessions in the South China Sea .
