  • 00:00The Internet of Things era is here and disrupting how we work play and live. IBM is considered one of the leaders in the market thanks to its Watson technology. Last year the company created its own IO T unit and appointed Harriet green its leader . She joins us now from London. Hello Harriet. I was reading recently that only 1 percent of Ise data is used in a strategic way. How you are changing that so you're absolutely right. Amber that the phenomena that is the Internet of Things is giving pretty much everything eyes and ears. Everything becomes a computer. And with that enormous amounts of data are created here at IBM we have Watson which is a cognitive computing capability that helps to make sense of all these sounds video noise data to help solve real problems in the way people live and work here. There's a lot of speculation about what's needed to enable wireless networks to make all this work. What do you see as the investment needed in wireless networks. So I think there are many investments needed to get the benefits from the internet of things so you have to be able to make sense of this data. You need to be able to correlate it and create patterns . And of course communicate it. So the relationship between 5G and the Internet of Things is truly emancipating and we're excited about the developments that are already happening. How are you. Can you give us some specific examples of certain industries that are benefiting from actionable IO T data and just how how they're doing so. Absolutely. Let's take an area like an entire how we live and how we work. So if we start with buildings one of the biggest building companies in the world Siemens who's working with IBM through our platform are applications and digital transformation to make the buildings happier buildings so more efficient more able to regulate and create the environments people like and are more efficient whilst working within. And if you take that building steam working with Kony one of the largest elevator and escalator companies in the world using the Internet of Things data to ensure maintenance ensure that before we all arrive at Terminal 5 that everything is working and ready for us six billion people a day utilize those elevators and escalators and then companies who manage huge facilities whether it's here at the Bloomberg building or a company across the Nordic like i s s ensuring that by giving buildings eyes and ears that we can manage whether it's meeting rooms what we eat what we drink that these are truly efficient and wonderful places to work. So those are three companies already creating new products and services out of the data that they collect using Watson to help make these correlations and talk to us in real time natural language . Harriet how does a small or medium business ultimately engage with Watchmen. I mean we all understand how a large enterprise can get engaged with you but let's talk about small medium businesses. Well one of the exciting things about the Internet of Things is the disruptive elements. So we're working with many many startups many small companies a couple of weeks ago I talked about Blue Bell on national television a an Internet startup using Watson and the Internet of Things a company a product called owning which is an electric cognitive vehicle that's being used in three or four states in North America. That's truly electric. You get in and you say you know can you tell me where there is great chinese food tonight and early will being able to recognize what you're asking be able to gather the data and then communicate to you in natural language. And that's a relatively small company Local Motors that has developed that. So you know there are those that are disrupting those that will be disrupted and we're able to work and support a very wide range of companies across the globe. This is you know our Internet of Things headquarters is in Munich which is really driving this full point oh this digitization of the physical world which really means that things and people are communicating with each other to make life better to make work for example safer. This is really affecting the way people live .

How Watson Is Driving Innovation at IBM

September 1st, 2016, 10:09 PM GMT+0000

The world first met Watson in 2011, when the cognitive computer beat humans in the game of Jeopardy. Today, it's the engine of the Internet of Things division at IBM, analyzing mass amounts of data and offering insights and answers in a matter of seconds. Bloomberg hosts Amber Mac and Anthony Lacavera speak to the chief of IBM's Watson IoT division Harriet Green about how the technology is being applied within companies to change how we work and live.
