  • 00:00Right. I mean the optics of it seem obvious right. A terrorist . He's got an iPhone. Of course the FBI would want to get in and figure out if there is any future danger here. But really what are we talking about why is Apple so resistant from the technical point of view from a technical perspective. Apple is fighting this because what the FBI is doing is a very dangerous power grab and an excessive overreach. Historically FBI Microsoft all the tech giants have worked with governments around the world in the US. The FBI has worked with the FBI in national security when they file the appropriate orders through national security letters or court orders in this particular case I think the FBI made a mistake in how they handled the phone. They locked themselves out and they're using this case as an end run not to break into the phone. But I think to break Apple Well that's that's a big allegation against the FBI because at the end of the day it is a terrorist investigation. ISIS is growing. Why is Apple saying that. Smartphone users like mean you are the ones who are in danger here because in this particular case what the FBI has asked the court to do is force Apple to write a up over the year update a patch that will let the FBI break into this one particular handset that they themselves locked themselves out of. And I don't think the judge understands a technical or financial ramifications of forcing Apple to write this one time custom patch because it won't be a one time. And so Apple is as they said today they would have to build a homeless care facility and basically write a new government OS that would allow them to break in two phones and it won't be just one phone. As we know from history after 9/11 the Patriot Act was passed ostensibly to fight terrorism . But if you look at data just from 18 months ago in over 99 percent of the cases the Patriot Act was used to go against low lying drug users or drug criminals not terrorism. And why do you think the FBI is doing in this case. I mean from their perspective they're right. They want to break into this phone because their primary mission is to prosecute criminals and safeguard the country. What they're not looking at I think is the overall long term consequences of this. They're actually putting the entire American tech industry at risk. Well let's talk about the broader implications not only for Apple Samsung Lenovo you name it far away. What does it mean for smartphone makers. Well if Apple loses this case whether Apple caves in or they lose the court battles then all that means is every electronics manufacturer. And it's not just smartphone makers . It's also the TV makers. It's the car manufacturers. Every tech manufacturer and every tech company becomes an unpaid arm of law enforcement. And if it happens in the U.S. it will happen globally. And so either we're going to Balkanize the tech industry or we're going to have a whole new level of Orwellian surveillance that we've never seen in human history at the end of the day it's not just smartphones we're talking about here right. I mean they're in the in the run up of the Internet of Things. Everything is gonna be connected to the World Wide Web. What does this mean for you and me for the consumers and for the people who actually use these day to day things in our lives. Well what it means for us is one just in the last week or so. The head of national security said that yes they are going to use Internet of Things to conduct surveillance inside the US outside the US. Right now the Internet of Things is really the Internet of insecure things . Most ise devices are not secure. And my advice to anyone who'll listen and I read this in my second book as well is when it comes to smart devices smart homes only dumb people live in smart homes because most smart devices are very insecure . They're really an invitation for criminals terrorists and law enforcement to ransack your property and your privacy. Stay away from new gadgets until they've been verified in the market by security professionals and let somebody else be the guinea pig .
