  • 00:00What Silicon Valley's reaction to this verdict. It's very interesting because as I look at my Twitter feed as I talk to people in tech as I you know just everyone in San Francisco is talking about this right now and it seems clear that although Kleiner won in court they've lost in the court of public opinion . People really think that the way that they portrayed. Ellen Pao the way that they went to court on this shows you know some some actual issues at the firm with with in terms of how they reward people for promotion in terms of how they evaluate women . And so it's definitely gotten people thinking and whether or not Ellen POW's claims were legitimate. Of course the jury thought that they weren't. Other women have come forward to talk about their stories and their perspective on discrimination . Sheryl why did Kleiner is do you think take a reputational hit . Was this a big firm against one woman who had I guess in their opinion and the opinion of some. The audacity to speak out about what she saw was bias. Right. So what I've heard from other women is just the fact that they spent so much time and of their resources discrediting her trying to paint a picture of her as a liar who was opportunistic. I mean that was their main case in court that this woman should not be believed was not good enough to have succeeded at the firm anyway. And if they're putting all their effort into saying things like that about somebody used to be a partner you know that just doesn't fly so well. Sir this case was very polarizing why did it get so much attention in the tech industry. This is one of the first times that a discrimination case like this has really reached the public. And this this discussion has been percolating for a very long time. So the year after Ellen Pao filed her case Sheryl Sandberg wrote Lean In a couple of years later we have people releasing the diversity statistics. You know Apple Google Facebook all of those companies releasing statistics that show that less than 30 percent of their workforce in some cases is female. And so there has been this this momentum here in Silicon Valley and it hasn't really been discussed in such a manner where both sides get to fully explore all the evidence and go through it point by point. And so whether or not you know whatever the verdict was and how this plays out after this people have started to talk about how this shapes their perspective how they can move forward. Speaking of shake being perspective Sara we did hear from some of the jurors after the verdict. What was their sense why did they vote the way they did. A lot of it was he said she said in court Ellen Powell was saying no these are the things that happened to me . This is how I felt that I was discriminated against Kleiner Perkins comes on the stand and they say she's lying right. So so without so much hard evidence who really you know how can you say definitively that it's discrimination. And then the other factor here is is that venture capital is is this industry where the metrics for success are not very set in stone right. These investments that they make are supposed to have a return over seven years 10 years. So a year by year performance is not really what determines whether you succeed or fail it's you know how well your colleagues like you in many cases whether they whether companies want to put you on their boards whether you bring more deals into the firm. And so all of that is very subjective. And so it's difficult to say definitively that Ellen Pao was good or bad at her job. It really is just the opinion of her superiors. SARA Are we likely to see similar lawsuits against tech companies and venture capital firms is there a danger that the outcome of Ms Powers case will keep women from speaking up. It's twofold right. Women in Silicon Valley already feel that if they speak up it's a liability that they're forever stamped as an activist that their careers may be hampered. But as a result maybe as not as a result of this case but certainly in conjunction with this case we've seen other suits pop up in the last couple of weeks for example a suit against Facebook and a suit against Twitter. So people are coming forward and saying you know regardless of the verdict here I do want to make my story told and I do want to you know be part of this this momentum right now people are starting to realize really what are the factors of discrimination and saying Oh that's what's happening to me. Sir we have about 30 seconds left. What's next for Ellen Pao. Well she is CEO interim at rhetoric Reddit which is the popular online forum. You know she she spends a lot of time on this case. When I went to closing our she was she was smiling she was chatting she was so ready for it to be over. I hope we'll see her around. I hope we're not done hearing from her .

March 30th, 2015, 6:51 PM GMT+0000

A jury soundly rejected Ellen Pao’s claims of gender discrimination by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, in a case that riveted Silicon Valley for weeks and exposed how women fare in the male-dominated world of venture capital. Bloomberg’s Sarah Frier reports on “Bottom Line.” (Source: Bloomberg)
