Canada Lawmakers Urge Ban on Tankers in North British Columbia
Canadian lawmakers voted in favor of a motion calling on the government to ban oil tankers from the northern coast of British Columbia.
Lawmakers voted today 143 to 138 in favor of the New Democratic Party’s motion, which demanded the government “ban bulk oil tanker traffic” in northern British Columbia. The motion is not binding.
The Northern Gateway Alliance, a group that supports Enbridge Inc.’s Northern Gateway Project, said supporting the motion would mean lawmakers jeopardize more than 1,000 jobs related to the pipeline. Enbridge wants to build a pipeline that would link oil production in Alberta to the British Columbia’s port of Kitimat.
