'People Power' Takes Over Sri Lanka's Presidential Palace

Thousands of Sri Lankans stormed and occupied the nation’s Presidential Palace over the weekend, forcing President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to flee his residence and eventually announce that he will step down on Wednesday.

The eruption of public anger follows months of demonstrations, when citizens occupied swathes of road across the ocean-front building. They have been protesting against severe shortages of food and fuel, which have shut schools and offices and are expected to stoke inflation to 70%.
