As It Unfolded: Attack on Former Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe

The killing of former leader Shinzo Abe on Friday morning stunned Japan and generated an outpouring of sympathy from around the world.

Japan’s longest-serving premier was unresponsive after being shot from close range while at a campaign event in the western city of Nara, and died later. Police arrested a 41-year-old former member of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force on suspicion of attempted murder.
