Trump’s State Visit-Turned-Stress Test for the Special Relationship: Photos

The U.S. president’s first official act on his U.K. trip was to insult the mayor of London as a “stone cold loser.”

U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in the U.K. at a sensitive moment, with political rivals jostling to replace outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May. At the same time, the so-called special relationship is under strain on a range of issues, including Huawei Technologies Co.’s role in U.K. broadband networks and whether American drug and insurance companies can gain a bigger role in Britain’s National Health Service.

While the first day of his three-day visit featured royals, pomp and circumstance, Tuesday will bring political talks and potentially large anti-Trump demonstrations on the streets of London. There have already been scattered protests, and the Trump Baby blimp has returned. Trump’s final day in Britain is to feature a visit to the southern city of Portsmouth for a D-Day commemoration that includes a flyover by vintage airplanes.
