Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, both driving for team Mercedes, race up the hill at the Monaco Formula One Grand Prix Sunday in Monte-Carlo, Monaco. The race is famous for the extravagant wealth it attracts and for its technicality, with a track so difficult that passing other racers is virtually impossible.

Lewis Hamilton of Great Britain and Nico Rosberg of Germany are shown here during the Monaco Formula One Grand Prix. Early reports had said the world champion Hamilton beat Mercedes team-mate Rosberg by 0.342 seconds, with Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel third ahead of Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo. But Hamilton was ultimately denied victory because of a strategic error by his Mercedes team, therefore handing Rosberg the win.

The weekend is full of celebrities from all over the world attending, including many who had attended the Cannes Film Festival nearby. Many take yachts up the French Riviera coast from one town to the other; others drive Lamborghinis, Ferraris or six-figure vintage cars.

The race course is surrounded by hills, all of which circle the main waterway where yachts, speed boats and larger ships dock for the weekend. Many of them hold after-parties on deck in the days before and after the race.

Hamilton had been beaten here in Monaco by Rosberg for the last two years and had also been defeated by Rosberg in the last race in Spain, so this win would have been particularly significant. He had controlled the pace of the race for many of the early laps.

There are stadium seats set up along some parts of the race course, but the best views come from the chateaus and private penthouses that also surround the course.
