Overview
Overview
The new front-wheel-drive Lexus CT 200h, scheduled to hit dealer showrooms in late February, is a terrific upscale alternative to the Toyota Prius (TM), sold by the parent company of Lexus. This all-new model has two big selling points: a relatively low price—it's the least-expensive model in the Lexus lineup, with a starting price of $29,995—and an average fuel economy rating of 42 miles per gallon. It's no BMW but the CT 200h has a nicer cabin and greater driving panache than such high-mileage competitors as the Prius and Honda Insight (HMC). We'd recommend test-driving Lexus's new entry level hybrid against a diesel-powered Audi A3 wagon (NSU:GR), which is rated to get 42 mpg on the highway. We like both and would be hard-pressed to choose one over the other.

The cabin feels upscale. The steering wheel is chunky and the seats and dashboard are clad in soft black or gray NuLuxe, an environmentally friendly alternative to leather. The rear seats are roomy enough to accommodate two adults and also fold down for hauling.

Engine/Transmission
Engine/Transmission
The 80-horsepower electric and 98-hp gasoline power plants generate a combined 134 hp, equal to that of the Toyota Prius. The transmission is a fuel-efficient, continuously variable automatic.

Performance
Performance
The CT 200h is rated to accelerate from 0 to 60 in 9.8 seconds, same as the Prius. However, a low center of gravity, rigid frame, and lateral dampers provide crisp handling. "Sport" mode alters throttle, steering, and suspension settings to give the car a sprightly feel.

Fuel Economy
Fuel Economy
Mileage is rated at 43 miles per gallon in the city and 40 on the highway for a combined 42 mpg. That trails the Toyota Prius' 50 mpg, but matches the 42 mpg of the 2011 Honda Insight, and bests the Ford Fusion (F) hybrid (39 mpg) and Audi A3 diesel (34 mpg).
