Michigan is taking a rare step to protect its meat-industry workers, ordering social-distancing requirements on an unprecedented scale.

Under an executive order Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed Thursday, the state is compelling meat and poultry processing plants to “configure communal work environments so that employees are spaced at least 6 feet apart in all directions.”
