Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s Labor party has secured a morale-boosting victory in an election in the nation’s largest state, enhancing his chances of a come-from-behind win in a federal vote that must be held by May 17.

Western Australia’s Premier Roger Cook was returned with a clear majority in Saturday’s ballot, winning 40 seats, compared to just five for the opposition Liberal party, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corp. The Nationals secured four seats while 10 are still undecided, ABC said. That solidified the center-left Labor party’s hold on the mining powerhouse state and defied predictions of a voter backlash after eight years in office.
