The UK’s grid operator is preparing to ask consumers to turn down their electricity use while putting a second coal-fired power unit on standby as it seeks to boost supplies during a cold spell.

One unit at Electricite de France SA’s facility at West Burton will join Uniper SE’s Ratcliffe plant to be available to provide power on Tuesday, National Grid Plc’s Electricity System Operator said. Households and businesses may be asked to reduce demand as the cold triggers a surge in consumption just as falling wind speeds curb power generation from turbines.
