Anu Sharma’s pregnancy brought gestational hypertension, an unplanned C-section and a near-hemorrhage during her daughter’s birth. When she left the hospital with her newborn, she was given the standard line for most new mothers: Come back in six weeks. 

Thirty-six hours later, Sharma knew something was wrong. She returned to the hospital after self-diagnosing herself with postpartum preeclampsia, a condition that when left untreated can lead to strokes.
