New York City Mayor Eric Adams appointed Laura Kavanagh to lead the fire department, making her the first woman to head the agency in its 157-year history.

Kavanagh, 40, has been serving as interim fire commissioner since February, when Commissioner Daniel Nigro retired. She will now officially oversee the biggest US fire department, which has a $2 billion budget and 17,000 employees, including firefighters, emergency workers and 911 dispatchers.
