Korean Oil Firm Faces Greenwashing Claims Over Carbon-Offset Ads

  • SK’s Uruguay project criticized for limited climate benefits
  • Global companies come under scrutiny for making misleading ads

Activist groups in South Korea have accused SK Lubricants Co. of greenwashing, alleging the company is using an unreliable carbon-offsetting project to advertise its products.

In an ad campaign in September, SK said customers can buy carbon-neutral engine lubricants because it’s offsetting emissions with high-quality carbon credits from a reforestation project in Uruguay. Solutions for Our Climate and Consumers Korea are bringing separate claims to regulators, saying the project has been criticized for offering no environmental benefits.
