State-level campaigns and other political committees are on track to spend $7 billion in the midterm elections, according to a new projection by OpenSecrets, a Washington-based group that tracks money in politics.

The record amount, which will top the $6.6 billion spent in the 2018 midterms, doesn’t include the billions raised by US Senate and House candidates and the parties and super political action committees supporting them.
