The National Archives negotiated with Donald Trump for months as the government sought to assess potential national security damage from the documents he took from the White House, according to a May 10 letter from the agency.

Fifteen boxes of files returned by Trump in January contained more than 100 documents -- totaling more than 700 pages -- with classified markings, including some with the highest-level classification, according to the letter from Debra Steidel Wall, acting head of the National Archives and Records Administration.
