When Chelsea FC play their first home game on Sunday, one of the most closely scrutinized performances will be that of an American billionaire with close ties to baseball and basketball.

Todd Boehly, 48, has stepped into the shoes of Roman Abramovich, the deep-pocketed former Chelsea owner who brought unprecedented success to the London club during his almost two decades of ownership before being forced to sell this year over his links to Vladimir Putin’s Russia.
