London Fire Brigade is asking London councils to prohibit the use of disposable barbecues in all public parks and open spaces as pressure mounts on firefighters tackling multiple fires across the capital during a record-breaking heat wave.

London Fire Commissioner Andy Roe, in a letter published on the UK’s hottest day on record, pleaded for a temporary ban as the Fire Brigade declared a major-incident response to the fires. Firefighters have tackled more than 1,000 grass and open-land blazes in the capital since the beginning of June, and this year there have been 43 large grass fires in London, compared with only seven in 2017.
