If Mario Draghi doesn’t change his mind about quitting as prime minister, the euro area as well as Italy is set to face a profound crisis that could unsettle markets for months.

The former European Central Bank head is expected to indicate by early next week if he is ready to once again take the lead of a fractious coalition government, or whether he will make good on his promise to leave office permanently.
