We encounter calories everywhere—on nutrition labels, restaurant menus and in any of the plethora of apps designed to help people lose weight. Calories may seem simple and static: Every food has a set amount of calories, and physical activity burns calories. If you want to shed pounds, just eat fewer calories than you burn. Calories in, calories out.
