BMW AG and BASF SE are taking steps on their gas consumption in response to dwindling supplies from Russia that prompted Germany to activate the second stage of its emergency plan.

Europe’s biggest chemicals maker, which relies on gas for production and electricity, said it may cut production as it expects further price rises as utilities buy more, according to a statement Thursday. Power suppliers are obligated to cover contracts to customers.
