Number of Underwater Russell 3000 Stocks Surges to Record

  • Companies trading for less than cash on hand increases
  • Metric may be a sign of where investors can find bargains

The number of Russell 3000 companies, excluding financial firms, trading below cash has surpassed the month-end record set during the global financial crisis. 

As of Wednesday’s close, the market capitalizations of 167 Russell 3000 companies, including three major airlines, were below the firms’ cash holdings. The monthly record was 165 in February 2009.
